Partnering, Leading, and Following

Social dancing relies on clear communication, not memorized routines. Leaders learn how to give soft, clear cues with their hands and body weight, while followers learn how to read those cues smoothly without guessing or overthinking.

Open Turns and Cross-Body Traveling

Once your basic footwork is automatic, we introduce essential social turns. You will practice simple leader turns, follower turns, and dynamic traveling steps that let you move effortlessly around a crowded dance floor without bumping into others.

No Partner? No Problem!

One of the most common questions we get at Dennis PaSamba Dance Company is: "Do I need to bring a partner to sign up?"

The answer is a simple no! In all of our progressive group courses, we rotate partners frequently throughout the class. Rotating partners is actually the single fastest way to build real social dance skills because it teaches you how to lead or follow anyone, regardless of their height or dance experience. Plus, it makes every class a fun, friendly social event where you get to meet wonderful people from all over Chicago. (Of course, if you arrive with a date or partner and prefer not to rotate, just let your instructor know!)

I love turning the music up, standing at the front of the room, and breaking the rhythm down into simple steps. Within fifteen minutes, the tension dissolves. You start seeing smiles in the mirrors as everyone feels the back-step lock into place. By week two, students who were timid on day one are executing crisp turns and laughing off small missteps. Learning in class is step one; practicing in a real party environment is where the magic happens! To help you transition from the studio mirror to the real world, we host our popular Friday Socials on the 1st & 3rd Friday of every month from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM.

Our socials feature a lively blend of Salsa, Bachata, and Cumbia music. Note that drop-ins are permitted only on Friday socials, making them an easy, low-pressure spot to drop by, practice your new turns, meet fellow students, and experience Chicago's vibrant social dance community firsthand.
