What Shoes Should You Wear to Your First Dance Class?
You do not need to buy expensive ballroom or Latin dance shoes before your first lesson. Many beginners walk through our doors wearing everyday footwear, which works perfectly well for getting started. We want you to feel comfortable and confident without spending extra money on specialized gear right away. Our group classes are $95 for 4 weeks, so you can focus on learning the basic steps first before making any bigger investments in dance apparel.
When choosing footwear from your closet for your first group class, look for shoes with a smooth bottom. Shoes with leather or hard plastic soles allow you to slide and turn smoothly on the dance floor. Standard rubber-soled sneakers tend to grip the wood floor too tightly, which can catch your feet when you try to pivot. Smooth soles help protect your knees and ankles by letting your feet move naturally across the floor as you learn.
Comfort and ankle stability are your top priorities when picking out shoes for your initial class. Avoid wearing flip-flops, backless sandals, heavy work boots, or extremely tall stilettos. Shoes that secure firmly around your heel or ankle, such as flat dress shoes, loafers, or sturdy flats, work wonderfully. If you prefer wearing heels, choose a lower, wider heel with a secure ankle strap so your foot stays in place while you practice new footwork with different partners.
In our beginner group classes, you do not need to bring a partner because all partners rotate throughout the session. This dynamic social environment means you will be moving around the floor constantly with different classmates. Having comfortable, secure shoes keeps your feet feeling fresh as you practice basic turns and footwork drills. You will enjoy the energy of the room much more when your feet are not slipping out of loose backless shoes.
Once you complete a few sessions and decide to stick with dancing, you might consider buying real dance shoes. Ballroom and Latin shoes feature flexible suede soles and extra cushion that help you feel the floor better. However, there is zero rush to buy them right away. You are welcome to take several four-week series in your regular smooth-soled street shoes until you feel ready to upgrade your footwear for social dancing.

Questions people ask
Can I wear regular running sneakers to my first group class?
While you can wear sneakers if that is all you have, running shoes with thick rubber treads can grip the floor too much. This heavy grip makes turns harder and can put unnecessary strain on your knees. A shoe with a smoother leather or hard plastic bottom is a much better choice for your first class.
Do I need to bring a partner to my first group class?
No partner is needed to join our beginner group classes. Partners rotate throughout the class so everyone gets to dance with different people while learning the steps. Our group classes are $95 for 4 weeks of fun instruction.
