Can I Stay With My Own Partner During Group Dance Classes?
In our regular group classes, partners rotate throughout the lesson. This helps students practice leading and following with different body types and skill levels. Rotating helps people learn faster because they do not get used to just one person's habits. However, some students prefer to stay with the person they came with. You might bring a spouse, date, or friend and only want to dance together.
If you come with a partner and strictly prefer not to rotate, you can choose to opt out of the circle rotation. We want you to feel comfortable while learning to dance at our studio. You simply inform the instructor before the class starts that you two wish to stay together. You can step slightly off the main rotating circle line and keep practicing the steps with each other as the rest of the class rotates around.
Dancing exclusively with your own partner has some great benefits. You build a strong connection with your specific partner right from the beginning. Couples often use our group dance classes as a fun night out together. Staying together lets you learn at your shared pace without adapting to a new person every few minutes. You get to focus entirely on your teamwork, trust, and shared timing throughout the entire four-week session.
There are also reasons why instructors encourage rotation when you feel comfortable trying it. Dancing with multiple partners teaches your lead to be clearer and your follow to be more responsive. When you only dance with one person, you might accidentally compensate for each other's mistakes. Rotating helps you spot areas where your technique needs work. Still, the choice to stay with your designated partner is always respected at our Irving Park studio.
What if you come alone to class and do not want to rotate? In group classes, solo students rely on partner rotation so everyone gets a chance to lead or follow. If you come by yourself and refuse to rotate, you will not have a dedicated partner for the partnerwork portion of the class. Solo students who do not wish to dance with strangers often focus on footwork, or they can bring a friend along to serve as their permanent partner.
Our studio atmosphere is welcoming, friendly, and low-pressure for dancers of all levels. We located our space in the Six Corners area of Irving Park with convenient free parking for all students. Our group classes cost $95 for a 4-week series. Whether you decide to rotate with the group or stick strictly with your own partner, you will still get thorough instruction on timing, footwork, turn patterns, and basic dance techniques.
Communication with your instructor is key if you decide not to rotate partners in class. Before class starts, just mention your preference to the teacher so they know not to prompt you to move. Our instructors will make sure you are still included in all demonstrations and explanations. You will get the full benefit of the lesson while remaining completely comfortable with your chosen partner throughout every single class meeting.
Questions people ask
Do I have to pay extra if my partner and I choose not to rotate in group class?
No, there is no extra fee if you choose to stay together. Group classes are $95 per person for a 4-week series regardless of whether you rotate or stay with your own partner. Just let the instructor know your preference at the start of the lesson.
What should I do if I attend class alone but do not want to touch or dance with strangers?
If you come alone and prefer not to rotate with strangers, you can focus on learning the footwork and shine portions of the class. For partnerwork practice without rotating, we recommend bringing a friend or partner to class with you. You can also contact us by texting or calling 717-PaSamba to discuss your options.
Will the instructor enforce partner rotation if my partner and I say no?
No, our instructors will never force you to rotate if you explicitly ask to stay together. We want everyone at Dennis PaSamba Dance Company to feel safe and relaxed. Simply step out of the rotation circle and continue practicing the drills with your partner.
