What shoes should you wear to winter group dance lessons?
Winter weather in Chicago brings snow, ice, and salt to the sidewalks outside. Wearing your heavy winter boots directly onto the dance floor ruins the polished wood surface and makes spinning difficult. Always wear a warm pair of outdoor boots for your travel to the studio. Once you walk into our studio at 4820 W. Irving Park Rd., you can easily switch into clean indoor shoes before your class begins.
The most important rule for winter group dance lessons is bringing a separate pair of clean shoes. Do not wear the shoes you walked in with across the snowy street. Water and salt damage ballroom floors and create slippery hazards for other dancers. Carry your indoor dance shoes in a small bag and put them on in our sitting area. This simple step keeps everyone safe and preserves the floor quality.
For men and women, light leather-soled shoes or suede-soled dance shoes are the top choice for indoor lessons. Leather and suede allow you to pivot smoothly without catching your foot on the floor. Heavy rubber soles from sneakers can grip the wood too much, which puts unwanted stress on your knees and ankles. Pick shoes that secure firmly to your feet so they do not slip off while you turn.
If you do not own specialized dance shoes yet, comfortable dress shoes or flat leather loafers work very well. Women can wear low heels or flats with a secure ankle strap. Avoid high stilettos, backless sandals, or heavy winter boots while practicing your steps. You want a flexible shoe that allows your ankles to move naturally as you rotate with different partners in our welcoming Irving Park group classes.
Socks and tights also play a big role in winter shoe comfort. Cold weather might make you want to wear thick wool socks, but bulky socks make your dance shoes fit too tightly. Choose thin or medium-weight moisture-wicking socks to keep your feet warm without adding bulk. Bringing an extra pair of dry socks to change into before class starts will keep your feet comfortable throughout the hour.
Keep your street shoes organized and dry while you are in class. We offer designated areas where you can leave your boots and coat during your lesson. Free parking right near our Six Corners location makes it easy to step inside out of the cold quickly. You can focus on learning your steps without worrying about wet gear or cold feet during your 4-week group course.
Remember that our group classes are $95 for 4 weeks, and you do not need a partner to join. Since partners rotate during class, having comfortable shoes helps you move confidently with everyone. Proper footwear makes turning and stepping much easier as you practice. If you ever have questions about footwear or class schedules, call or text us at 717-PaSamba for quick answers.
Questions people ask
Can I wear my winter street boots during group dance lessons?
No, you should never wear outdoor winter boots on the studio dance floor. Street boots bring in salt, snow, and dirt that ruin the wood surface and create slick hazards. Please bring a clean, dry pair of shoes to change into after you enter the studio.
What if I do not own suede ballroom dance shoes for winter classes?
You do not need professional dance shoes to get started in our group lessons. Smooth leather-soled dress shoes or comfortable flats work great for beginners. Avoid thick rubber running shoes, as they grip the floor too hard and can strain your knees.
Is there a place to leave wet winter boots during class?
Yes, we have dedicated space at our Irving Park studio to leave your boots, coats, and bags during class. You can safely store your winter gear while you enjoy your 4-week group course. Parking is free, so getting from your car to our warm studio is fast and easy.
