What Happens When You Arrive For Your First Cumbia Class?
When you first arrive at Dennis PaSamba Dance Company, you will find easy free parking near our studio at 4820 W. Irving Park Rd. in the Six Corners neighborhood of Irving Park. Step inside and check in with our friendly front desk team. You do not need to bring a partner or have any previous dance experience. We welcome brand-new beginners every week, so you will fit right in with everyone else in class.
Before the music starts, your instructor will welcome the room and explain how the four-week session works. The entire group class series is just $95 for 4 weeks of instruction. Your instructor will go over studio guidelines, warm-up expectations, and basic dance floor etiquette. This quick introduction helps everyone relax, settle in, and feel comfortable before we start moving to the vibrant Latin rhythms of Cumbia music.
Week one always begins with a gentle group warm-up to get your body moving. You will learn the fundamental rhythm and basic footwork of Cumbia while standing in line facing the mirror. The instructor breaks down every step very slowly so you can follow along easily. You will practice counting the beats, stepping to the side, and getting used to the relaxed, bouncy movement that gives Cumbia its signature feel and style.
Once the basic footwork feels comfortable individually, the class transitions into partner practice. You never need to bring your own partner because we regularly rotate partners throughout the lesson. Rotating partners is a fantastic way to practice your timing, leading, or following with different dancers. It also creates a supportive, social environment where you can quickly meet your classmates and make new friends during your very first week.
During the middle portion of week one, you will learn your first simple turn and basic frame holding position. The instructor will walk around the room to offer helpful tips and personal feedback. You will practice connecting with your partner while keeping your footwork steady to the music. Everything is taught in small, manageable pieces so that you never feel overwhelmed or rushed while learning new dance steps.
In the final minutes of your first class, the instructor will play a full Cumbia song for practice. You will combine the basic step and simple turns you learned into a continuous pattern with different partners. This cool-down practice helps lock the muscle memory into your body. You will leave your first lesson feeling confident, relaxed, and excited to return for week two of your four-week course.
To get the most out of your first week, wear comfortable everyday clothes and smooth-soled shoes that let you slide easily on the dance floor. Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated during class. Remember that everyone in the room is learning right alongside you, so mistakes are completely normal and expected. If you ever have questions before your first class, text or call us at 717-PaSamba.
