Dennis PaSamba Dance Company
Students counting On1 in salsa class

We teach On1

Salsa On1 for Beginners

Our beginner salsa is On1: you break forward on the first beat of the music.

Where the 1 is

Salsa counts in eights: 1-2-3, pause, 5-6-7, pause. The 1 is the strong beat that starts each phrase. The instructor counts it out loud until you hear it in the song.

Why On2 is not the starter class

On2 breaks on the second beat. It feels smooth to experienced dancers but is harder to hear at first. On1 is easier to find, so we start there.

Questions people ask

Can I switch to On2 later?

Yes. A solid On1 makes learning On2 much easier.
