Who Leads in a Same-Sex Wedding Dance

Either partner can lead. There is no rule that the taller one, the one in the suit, or the one who proposed has to lead. We decide in the first lesson by trying both and seeing what feels natural.

Pick by the song, not by the suit

Leading means giving clear signals on the beat. The partner who hears the count more easily usually leads. Clothing does not matter: a lead can wear a gown and a follow can wear a tux.

Some couples switch halfway through the song. It reads beautifully to guests and gives both of you a moment.

Who takes the dip

The dip goes to the steadier partner, the one with better balance and a stronger base, as the support. The other partner is dipped. This is about safety, not roles.
