Dennis PaSamba Dance Company
Students comparing cumbia and salsa steps

Which first

Cumbia vs Salsa

Both are Latin partner dances, but they feel very different on the floor.

The difference

The short version:

  • Cumbia: slower, simpler, relaxed basic
  • Salsa: faster, more turns, tighter timing

Take cumbia first if you have never danced

Cumbia teaches you to hear the beat and move with a partner without the pressure of speed. Those skills carry straight into salsa when you are ready.

Questions people ask

Can I take both at once?

Yes. A second style in the same session is $55.
