Salsa Music You Hear in Class

Salsa songs are busy: horns, piano, congas, a singer. Finding the beat inside all that is the first skill.

How to find the 1

Listen for where a phrase starts, often a big horn hit or the singer's first word. Count 1 there and keep counting to 8. The instructor counts over the music until you hear it yourself.

Why it feels fast at first

Your brain is tracking feet, partner and music at once. As the basic becomes automatic, the same song starts to feel slower.

Questions people ask

Do you play slower songs for beginners?

Yes. Level 1 starts with easier tempos.
