Cumbia Classes for Beginners in Chicago

You do not need any dance background. Level 1 assumes you have never stepped onto a dance floor.

What week one feels like

You walk in, put your things down and line up with everyone else. The instructor counts the beat out loud while you practice the basic on your own. Then you try it with a partner, slowly, before the music speeds up.

Most people feel a little awkward for ten minutes and then start laughing. By the end of the hour you are moving to a real song.

What to wear

Comfortable clothes and shoes that slide a little. Skip sneakers with heavy grip.

Cumbia's Rich History

Cumbia began on Colombia’s Caribbean coast centuries ago. It blends Indigenous, African, and European musical traditions. The dance steps reflect its rich cultural origins.

Originally, Cumbia was danced with bare feet and circle formations. The music features drums, flutes, and percussion instruments. These elements create Cumbia's signature festive sound. Over time, Cumbia evolved and spread across Latin America. Each region added its own flavor to the dance. Today, it is enjoyed worldwide in many forms.

Learning Cumbia connects you to this beautiful cultural heritage. You will not only learn steps but also feel the spirit of its history. It is a dance of celebration and community.

Why Cumbia is Great for Beginners

Cumbia is an excellent dance for beginners. Its basic step is intuitive and easy to grasp. The rhythm is clear and inviting, making it simple to find the beat.
