How can you feel more comfortable before a cumbia night out?
Start by checking what a venue actually plays. A Latin music night may feature several dance styles rather than a full evening of cumbia. Ask about the music mix, entry requirements, and whether there is room for social dancing. That helps you choose an outing that matches what you want to practice.
For your own preparation, focus on keeping time, taking manageable steps, and moving comfortably with another person. You don’t need a long sequence of turns to enjoy a song. Tell us whether you’re starting from scratch or have danced socially before, so we can discuss a suitable learning option.
No partner needed. No experience needed. In our group classes, partners rotate, so you can come on your own and practice with different people. Founder and lead instructor Dennis PaSamba has taught Latin dance in Chicago since 1992. We welcome questions, including the ones you might feel awkward asking on a crowded dance floor.
We’re at 4820 W Irving Park Rd, Chicago, IL 60641, in the Six Corners / Irving Park area, with free parking. Group classes are $95 for 4 weeks. Before enrolling, ask us about current cumbia availability and which class fits your experience and goals. To book your starting point, text/call 717-PaSamba (717-727-2622).
Questions people ask
Are you a cumbia club?
We’re a dance studio, not a nightclub. Contact us for help preparing to dance socially, rather than club listings or nightlife reservations.
Can I join without a partner or dance experience?
Yes, no partner and no experience are needed for our group classes. Partners rotate, giving you opportunities to practice with different classmates.
What should I wear to get started?
We suggest comfortable clothing that lets you move and shoes that stay securely on your feet. Ask us about footwear before your first visit if you’re unsure what to bring.
How do I check the cumbia schedule?
Text/call 717-PaSamba (717-727-2622) to ask about current cumbia options and availability. Tell us your experience level and preferred days so we can help you choose your next step.
