The basic step
One foot steps back, the other stays, then you return to center. Switch sides and repeat. Knees soft, steps small.
Hearing the beat
Listen for the steady scrape of the guacharaca or the bass. Step on that pulse. The instructor counts out loud until you hear it on your own.
Why no turns yet
A turn on an unsteady basic throws both partners off. A solid basic makes turns easy in week two.
Questions people ask
Can I practice the basic at home?
Yes. A few minutes to any cumbia song helps.
