Dennis PaSamba Dance Company
Couple dancing a fast salsa turn

Fast songs

First Dance for an Upbeat Song

An upbeat song makes the room cheer, but it is harder to dance. Salsa timing gives you a structure that keeps up with the music.

Salsa timing

Salsa steps on 1-2-3, pauses on 4, and repeats on 5-6-7, pausing on 8. That pause is your breathing room on a fast song and the spot for a turn.

When to cut the song

Fast songs tire beginners quickly. Cut around 90 seconds, or start with a slow song and switch to the upbeat track for the last part.

When a slow song is better

If either of you feels rushed after the first lesson, a slow song with one salsa turn may suit you better. There is no shame in changing; the dance should feel good on the day.

Questions people ask

Can we do a surprise switch from slow to fast?

Yes. It is a popular choice. We rehearse the switch point so it lands cleanly.
