Ballads

First Dance for a Slow Song

Slow songs need small, smooth steps. Fast footwork on a ballad looks rushed, so we keep it close and let the music breathe.

Bachata or a simple sway

Bachata's four-count step sits naturally on most slow songs. If bachata still feels like too much, a sway with a weight shift on each beat works just as well.

Add one turn

Place a single slow turn where the song builds, usually the first chorus. It breaks up the sway and gives your photographer a shot.

Why not salsa

Salsa needs a quicker beat. On a slow song its steps either look hurried or have to be stretched until they lose their shape.

Questions people ask

Can we still dip on a slow song?

Yes. A slow dip on the last note suits a ballad well.
