Practice Your First Dance in the Wedding Dress

A gown moves differently from jeans. One run-through in the dress, or a skirt of the same length, shows you what needs to change before the wedding, not during it.

If you can, do one run-through

Many couples do this at a final fitting or at home with the dress on for ten minutes. If the dress cannot leave the shop, practice in a long, full skirt instead.

What to check

Run the whole dance once and watch for three things.

  • Hem: does a foot catch it on the turn?
  • Bustle: will it be up for the dance, and does it hold during the dip?
  • Arms: can you raise them for the turn, or do sleeves or straps pull?

Questions people ask

What if the dress restricts a move?

We swap or lower the move. A dance that fits the dress looks better than one that fights it.
