Can you learn cumbia without a partner?
Yes. You can work on cumbia timing, weight changes, and basic footwork on your own. Start by listening for a steady beat, then practice small steps without rushing. Let your weight settle onto each supporting foot instead of reaching with your legs. Keeping the movement compact makes it easier to stay balanced and repeat a pattern comfortably.
Solo practice and attending class alone are different things. If you want to dance entirely on your own, tell us before booking so we can discuss the right learning format. Our group classes include partner rotation, so you do not need to bring someone. Practicing your own timing can also help when you later connect with a partner.
We welcome beginners who want a foundation rather than a complicated routine. Our founder and lead instructor, Dennis PaSamba, has taught Latin dance in Chicago since 1992. For practice between lessons, choose a manageable stretch of music and repeat the same basic movement. If you lose the beat, pause, listen, and restart instead of trying to catch up.
We are at 4820 W Irving Park Rd, Chicago, IL 60641, in the Six Corners / Irving Park area, with free parking. Group classes are $95 for 4 weeks. Before reserving, ask about current cumbia options and explain whether you mean solo footwork or joining without a partner. Text/Call 717-PaSamba (717-727-2622) to confirm the right class and book.
Questions people ask
Do I need dance experience to start?
No experience is needed. We can help you identify a beginner starting point, even if keeping time with music feels unfamiliar.
Will I need to bring a partner?
No partner is needed for group classes because partners rotate. If your goal is strictly solo dancing, ask us about suitable options before booking.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothes that let you step and shift your weight easily. Choose secure shoes, and ask us about footwear if you are unsure.
How should I practice cumbia alone?
Clear enough space to take small steps without hitting furniture. Focus on steady timing and balanced weight changes before adding extra movement or speed.
